Safe & Affordable Accommodations In Costa Rica: A Budget Traveler’s Paradise

I was lucky enough to spend two weeks in beautiful Costa Rica, with most of it being solo. Driving in Costa Rica can get a little hairy, but finding affordable accommodations is easy. During my travel planning, I made sure to take into account other travelers’ reviews in addition to prices and features. This helped filter through the many hotels and guest houses to find accommodations that are both affordable and safe.

Embarking on a budget-friendly journey doesn’t mean compromising on safety and comfort. Costa Rica boasts numerous accommodations that strike the perfect balance between affordability and security. From cozy hostels to charming hotels, let’s delve into safe havens that won’t break the bank.

La Fortuna: Where Nature Meets Affordability

Nestled at the base of Arenal Volcano, La Fortuna offers a spectacular backdrop for budget travelers. Here, you’ll find hostels like La Choza Inn Hostel, praised for its pocket-friendly rates and positive reviews. Surrounded by lush greenery, it’s a hub for backpackers seeking adventure without burning a hole in their wallets.

If you like the energy and vibe of a hostel, but also want your own bathroom, book a private room at Arenal Backpackers Resort. They have private rooms for under $100 USD per night, a great budget option. They also have dorm rooms and tents which are even cheaper. When I stayed there, the staff was very friendly and helpful, and the property felt safe. They also have a great pool and a communal lounge area where we enjoyed homemade food and drinks with fellow travelers. The entire atmosphere set the tone for my trip and remained one of my favorite affordable accommodations in Costa Rica.

Nosara: Serenity On A Shoestring

Nosara, a coastal gem, beckons with its pristine beaches and laid-back vibe. For those seeking affordable accommodations, Selina Nosara is a go-to option. With budget-friendly prices and glowing reviews, this hostel captures the essence of Pura Vida without draining your funds. Here, you have the choice of dorm beds or private rooms, depending on your budget.

Another nearby hotel that I can personally recommend is Green Sanctuary Hotel. I always find myself searching for unique accommodations, and this choice did not disappoint. The rooms here are made out of shipping containers! It may not sound cozy, but keep an open mind. The rooms run a little over $100 USD per night depending on the time of year,  and each double room has a queen bed, private bathroom, air conditioning, and breakfast included.

The hotel itself is tucked away on a quiet street, but still a convenient walk to nearby yoga classes and Playa Guiones. It was a treat to wake up each morning to the sounds of the jungle right outside my door. I enjoyed my home-cooked breakfast while nearby families of monkeys did the same.

While staying there, I also opted for a special dinner one night that included a fire dance performance. The owners here were very kind and as a solo traveler, I felt welcomed and safe. Their resident pug also made me feel right at home as I scratched his belly any chance we crossed paths.

Samara: Beach Bliss Without The Price Tag

Samara’s sun-kissed beaches make it a paradise for budget-conscious travelers. Look no further than Hostel Mariposas, a favorite among backpackers for its affordability and positive feedback. Experience the Pacific charm without compromising on your budget.

When I stayed here, it had quite the social scene, with a group of global travelers making dinner and enjoying local beers together most nights. I was merely a blip to them, only passing through for a few nights, but they still welcomed me.

Samara was the only place during my Costa Rica travels where I was consistently approached by a single, creepy man. But I am happy to report that the other people of Samara were very quick to notice and ensure I didn’t become the topic of a true crime podcast.

This welcoming, calming vibe was also plentiful at Tico Adventure Lodge where I took a yoga class and got a massage. They also offer acupuncture. Talk about a one-stop shop! Accommodation-wise they have a lot to offer, from single rooms to the tree-top apartment which has 2 single beds, 2 queen beds, and an ocean view.

Affordable accommodations in Costa Rica are plentiful in this section of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Tamarindo: Budget-Friendly Waves And Sand

Tamarindo’s surf culture and golden beaches attract travelers from around the globe. Tamarindo has many accommodation options where positive reviews and reasonable rates converge. Enjoy the waves, sunsets, and a wallet-friendly stay.

For convenience, you can’t beat Pura Vida MINI Hostel or Selina Tamarindo, which are both just steps from the beach, restaurants, and bars. My friends and I opted for La Botella de Leche, which was a slightly longer walk from the beachfront strip, but we were looking for something on the quiet side. It was still a convenient location, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle to get a good night’s rest. In fact, the only noise we heard was the iguanas on the aluminum roof.

If you don’t mind being a bit north of the action in Tamarindo, Pipe House Playa Grande fits nicely into my favorite category of unique accommodations. It is located directly on Playa Grande, perfect for surfing and witnessing Costa Rica’s epic sunsets.  Maybe it’s obvious by the name, but each room is made from a pipe. Each bedroom is private and the gated community has four shared bathrooms, a yoga space, a jungle gym that hosts fitness classes, and a fully equipped kitchen.

Manuel Antonio: Nature’s Luxury On A Budget

Further south, you can also find affordable accommodations in Costa Rica. Manuel Antonio’s lush national park and diverse wildlife set the stage for a unique experience. The Blue Morpho House is one of the closest hostels to the national park,  providing budget travelers with a memorable, conveniently located stay.

There are many hotels closer to the beach, but you’ll pay for it. Just north, the fishing village of Quepos offers a less touristy home base. I recommend Villas Jacquelina where a private room will only set you back around $50 USD. It is very quiet, almost eerily so, but take a cab into town to eat at a traditional soda or walk to Jiuberths where you can choose your meal from the day’s catch.

Uvita: Have A Whale Of A Time

Heading further south towards Panama, Uvita is slightly more off-the-beaten-path but well worth a visit. This coastal town serves as the gateway to Marino Ballena National Park. It’s most well known for the migrating humpback whales who grace the waters here. The whales tail shaped beach is perfect for a stroll any time of year.

If a tree house in the jungle is the vibe you’re seeking, check out Flutterby House. I easily could’ve spent much more time here, enjoying the communal bar’s happy hour with fellow travelers from around the world. In fact, one night a French couple and I cooked together using a mix of Spanish, English, and French to communicate. But really, this is the tree house you dreamed of living in as a kid, with colorful murals, cozy nooks for reading, and exotic plants covering every nook and cranny. The price is right here, too, with dorm beds for $21 USD and private rooms for $34 USD.
