Charleston, South Carolina is a prime tourist hotspot, often acclaimed by Travel and Leisure as the top city to visit. Beyond being the oldest and largest city in South Carolina, Charleston encompasses much more than just its peninsula. It stretches to include North Charleston, Folly, Sullivan’s, James Island, Johns Island, Goose Creek, all the way up to Summerville. As a local, I’m excited to share with you how to experience the best of Charleston beyond the typical tourist attractions. Buckle up as we embark on the perfect day in this charming city.
Morning: Downtown Charleston
Our adventure begins in the heart of Charleston, where history meets modern charm. Start your day by fueling up at Harken Cafe, a local favorite known for its artisanal coffee and delicious breakfast options. With your caffeine fix in hand, set out to explore historic downtown Charleston.
Take a stroll down the iconic Rainbow Row, admiring the colorful historic homes that line the cobblestone streets. Make your way to the picturesque Waterfront Park, home to the iconic pineapple fountain, where you can relax and soak in the beauty of Charleston Harbor.
Continue your morning by walking along the Battery, a historic seawall promenade offering stunning views of the harbor and Fort Sumter. As the sun rises over the horizon, take a moment to appreciate the serene beauty of this coastal city.
Midday: Beachside Dining
As lunchtime approaches, it’s time to venture beyond downtown Charleston and explore the city’s beautiful beaches. Head to Folly Beach or Sullivan’s Island for a taste of coastal cuisine with a side of breathtaking views.
At Folly Beach, stop by Jack of Cups Salon for a laid-back dining experience with a creative twist. Indulge in their eclectic menu while taking in the laid-back vibes of this popular beach community. Don’t forget to snap a few photos of the iconic Morris Island Lighthouse, a favorite spot for both locals and visitors alike.
Alternatively, make your way to Sullivan’s Island and grab a bite to eat at Poe’s Tavern, a charming eatery named in honor of the legendary writer Edgar Allan Poe. After lunch, take a stroll along the pristine shores of Sullivan’s Island, where history and natural beauty converge.
Evening: North Charleston’s Culinary Scene
As the day winds down, make your way to North Charleston, a burgeoning culinary destination just a short drive from downtown. Start your evening at Riverfront Park, where you can enjoy a scenic walk along the waterfront and marvel at the stunning views of the Cooper River.
For dinner, indulge in a culinary feast at one of my favorite restaurants in the area, JackRabbit Filly or Kings BBQ. Both establishments offer an eclectic menu of heritage-driven new Chinese American cuisine crafted with locally sourced ingredients. Pair your meal with a craft cocktail and savor the flavors of the Lowcountry.
As you reflect on your perfect day in Charleston, remember that this is just a taste of what the city has to offer. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and world-class cuisine, Charleston is truly a gem waiting to be discovered.

I am currently 34 and recently discovered my love of travel when I turned 30 and I have not stopped since. I love to eat and like to say that I am a self proclaimed foodie. I try to go on at least two trips a year right now because I am a dog owner and my sweet girl is getting older and not as friendly. My travel motto is: “Will travel for food.”
