Australia’s Best Places to Visit As A Solo Female Traveler

Chanel Belej

From wherever you’re reading this, I can predict you’ve likely been privy to a positive review about Australia if you haven’t yet made it there yourself. Or rather, you’re a local taking up space in your usual stomping ground, for whatever reason. Truth is, Down Under isn’t the world’s largest island for nothing; there’s so much to explore, and it would take almost a lifetime to experience the best it has to offer. So, why wait for the girls to join you on your quest to conquer Oz? If you’re considering a solo vacation, Australia has the spots ready and waiting to welcome you. With a vast land to cover, I’ve summed up the country’s hotspots to get you planning.

Coastal Escapes

Byron Bay, New South Wales

Girls Who Travel

Whether you call yourself an Aussie or just a wannabe, chances are you’ve come across ‘Byron Bay’ in discussions. Needless to say, Byron’s vibrant surf culture and laid-back aura are what drive people to the coastal town, not to mention the Australians who reside there are some of the friendliest people around. Everything you’ll want to see is relatively within proximity unless you decide to tackle the trek to the iconic lighthouse perched at a lookout spot (which you most definitely should for its breathtaking views).

The most popular form of accommodation for solo female travellers is hostels, due to their prime location and fun communal spots to hang out and meet other girls doing it like you! If you’re looking for something more luxurious, there are secluded beachfront stays and wellness retreats like Elements of Byron, to take your relaxation to a whole new level.

It’s best to become familiar with your transportation options before you head out for the day, as there is less public transport than in the cities.

Noosa, Queensland

Girls Who Travel

The Sunshine Coast is considered a gem of Australia, and somewhere you definitely shouldn’t pass up for a solo vacation. Its activities galore with the crystalline waters on one side set against a lush National Park on the other. If water sports are your thing, take up a surfing lesson, or grab a SUP board and meander around the headland to view the town from afar. And if you take sports seriously whilst on holiday, coming prepared with everything in check to keep you safe is highly recommended.

Hostels are in abundance and ideal for meeting your like-minded girl squad. The likes of Sofitel and Mantra are there if you’re looking to treat yourself. While more often than not seaside towns in Australia serve up some of the best and freshest local cuisine, Noosa is graced with the presence of the Noosa Eat & Drink festival, occurring every year, as well as an annual jazz festival, among others. Great for encouraging solo guests and mingling opportunities to keep you feeling connected.

Desert Bound

Uluru, Northern Territory

Girls Who Travel

If you’re itching to scratch your adventurous side, head to the central Australian desert. While heading straight to the outback can seem daunting at first, with the right planning, this journey can be an unforgettable solo trip.

The striking colours of the open landscape and rich Indigenous culture stretching back millions of years make central Australia an unforgettable visit. Sunrise and sunset over Uluru are a must-see. Nearby Kata Tjuta National Park also offers stunning walks like the Valley of the Winds.

Popular stays range from resort village accommodation,  hostels and luxury lodges. Guided tours are the best way to get informed about ancient history and offer safe and easy access to the desert terrain.  In the desert, it’s hot in the day and cool at night, so bring sun protection and plenty of water, and book transport in advance. If you choose to hire or purchase a vehicle for your journey, make sure the car is up to the journey and familiarise yourself with some basics like how to change a tyre and check engine oil.

City Living

Melbourne, Victoria

Girls Who Travel

When compared to the other aforementioned travelling destinations, with a population of over 5 million, Melbourne city streets are bustling with energy. If you don’t consider yourself a city slicker, a forewarning, you may encounter over-stimulation (in the best way).

Melbourne’s culinary scene is top-tier, so rest assured, you will be well-fed, and well-cultured, and leave with a newfound appreciation of Australian gastronomy. In a city renowned for its arts and culture, the National Art Gallery of Victoria is a must-visit. The Melbourne Arts Precinct is a great way to relish your own company, especially when surrounded by oodles of delectable art showcasing Australian stories. Even the city walls are adorned with eclectic street art.

Although Melbourne is generally considered a safe place to travel, staying aware of your surroundings is advised, especially when on your own. Card payment is accepted almost everywhere, so you will only need to carry small amounts of local cash at a time.

Hobart, Tasmania

Girls Who Travel

This small but mighty island off the south coast of Australia is quintessential for the quieter traveller. Serene, cleansing, and equipped with all of nature’s remedies for disconnecting, Tasmania is Australia in peak form. It’s not difficult to understand that Tasmania’s latest tourism campaign champions the message ‘Come Down for Air’.

It’s packed with adventure (not the kind of party scene you see on Australia’s mainland). Tasmania’s capital city, Hobart, has the same safe feeling as a small country town. Whether you’re the active type and want to connect with others on a multi-day hike through one of the many National Parks, or simply indulge in a private sauna followed by a winery visit, there is something to suit you. Cosy stays are a Tasmanian special–from hostels to luxe off-grid retreats. It’s one of those places you have to experience to believe it’s there, so take this as your sign to bask in the serenity Tassie has to offer.

Ready to Take Flight?

There you have it, a bespoke itinerary to get you planning a solo trip of self-discovery (and probably) and some much-needed time in Australia. Land on a destination or two that suit your travel style; places where you’re confident you can fill up your days and reap the rewards of Aussie charm. When you’re finally basking in solidarity, you’ll be surprised that feeling alone isn’t even an option in this remarkable part of the world.
