Hidden Gems of the Netherlands

Girls Who Travel Netherlands

Forget Amsterdam!

Most people only think about the canals and nightlife, but there’s a whole other side to the Netherlands. Trust me, the hidden spots are even cooler. Here’s a list of secret gems you won’t find in every guidebook, from storybook villages to historic towns, stunning nature, and even modern cities waiting to be explored!

Utrecht: A Miniature Amsterdam

Girls Who Travel | Utrecht Netherlands

Amsterdam gets all the love, but Utrecht is like its chilled-out little cousin. Canals with picturesque views? Check. Medieval architecture that screams “old world”? Yep. And a lively scene with tons of stuff to do? Absolutely!

Utrecht’s crown jewel is the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. Climb to the top for insane views of the city. For a more relaxed vibe, wander along the Oudegracht (Old Canal). It’s lined with cute shops, cafés, and restaurants – perfect for grabbing a coffee and people-watching.

History and culture buffs will love Utrecht. The Centraal Museum is a must-see, and the Rietveld Schröder House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a mind-blowing example of modern architecture. Take a scenic walk or hop on a boat tour to get a different perspective on the canals. There are even quirky museums like the Railway Museum and the Miffy Museum (yes, that Miffy!).

Need a break from the city buzz? Chill out in Griftpark or the Botanic Gardens. Feeling fancy? De Haar Castle, just outside the city, looks like it stepped out of a fairytale. Top off your Utrecht adventure with dinner along the Oudegracht wharf cellars and some shopping in Hoog Catharijne. This city is the perfect blend of charming and exciting!

Giethoorn: The Venice of the Netherlands

Girls Who Travel | Giethoorn Netherlands

Giethoorn, known as the “Venice of the North,” is a gorgeous village famous for its canals and charming thatched-roof cottages.

The best way to see Giethoorn’s serene canals is by renting a whisper boat (super quiet and eco-friendly!) or taking a guided canal tour. If you’re feeling active, you can rent a canoe or paddleboard and explore at your own pace. But honestly, Giethoorn is a place to relax and soak up the scenery, so walking or cycling is the way to go. It lets you appreciate the peacefulness and lush surroundings.

While you’re there, check out Museum Giethoorn ‘t Olde Maat Uus to learn about the history and local way of life in this unique part of the Netherlands. For something different, the De Oude Aarde museum has a cool collection of minerals and fossils.

Of course, no visit is complete without trying the local food! Grab a table at one of the canal-side restaurants and enjoy some delicious Dutch cuisine while taking in the beautiful views. Finally, if you’re an outdoor enthusiast, don’t miss Weerribben-Wieden National Park nearby. Perfect for hiking, bird-watching, and getting a dose of nature!

Maastricht: A Cesspit of Netherland’s Cultures

Girls Who Travel | Maastricht Netherlands

Maastricht feels like a mix of all things good – Dutch, Belgian, and French influences all rolled into one! It’s located way down south in the Netherlands. This city is steeped in history, with stunning medieval architecture like the Saint Servatius Basilica and old city walls that are still standing strong.

Foodies, rejoice! Maastricht is known for its amazing food scene, with tons of gourmet restaurants and cafes to choose from. And if you’re into art, keep an eye out for the annual European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF) – it’s a huge deal!

Haarlem: Historical Charm and Modern Vibes

Girls Who Travel | Haarlem Netherlands

Haarlem is the perfect Amsterdam escape! Just a quick train ride away, it offers a charming mix of history and modern life. The Grote Markt (big market square) is a must-see, with gorgeous buildings like the Grote Kerk (big church) and the town hall straight out of the 1600s.

Art lovers will geek out over the Frans Hals Museum, packed with works by this famous Dutch painter. Haarlem also has a killer shopping scene and tons of cosy cafes and restaurants to explore. And history buffs, don’t miss the Teylers Museum, the oldest in the Netherlands! Top it all off with delicious food and drinks scattered throughout the city – Haarlem is a delightful little gem.

The Wadden Islands: Nature’s Haven

Girls Who Travel | The Wadden Netherlands

The Wadden Islands, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a unique blend of natural beauty and outdoor activities. If you’re seeking natural beauty, you can explore the stunning beaches and dunes of Texel, the largest island, and visit Ecomare, a seal sanctuary and nature museum. Cycling is the best way to discover the islands’ scenic landscapes and charming villages, with well-marked trails on each island. On Terschelling, you can hike through the diverse habitats of the Boschplaat nature reserve and enjoy the laid-back cultural scene, including the annual Oerol Festival.

I also suggest experiencing the mudflat hiking (wadlopen) during low tide, which is a guided adventure that lets you walk on the sea floor between the islands. Schiermonnikoog, the smallest inhabited island, is perfect if you want a peaceful retreat with serene beaches and abundant birdlife. And if you’re an environmentalist, you’ll be happy to know that Vlieland is a car-free environment with extensive cycling paths. Finally, don’t hesitate to immerse yourself in local history and culture by visiting traditional fishing villages, historic lighthouses, and maritime museums scattered across the islands.

‘s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch): A Taste of Netherland’s Tradition

Girls Who Travel | Den Bosch Netherlands

History and art lovers, listen up! ‘s-Hertogenbosch (or Den Bosch for short) is your happy place. This Dutch city is bursting with culture. The must-see is the incredible St. John’s Cathedral – the Gothic architecture and sculptures are mind-blowing. Art fanatics will love the Noordbrabants Museum, with works by both the famous Jheronimus Bosch and contemporary artists.

To get the full Den Bosch experience, wander the charming streets of the medieval city center and soak up the energy of squares like the Markt. For a unique perspective, take a boat tour through the Binnendieze, the city’s historic underground canals!

Don’t miss the local legend, the Bossche Bol – a giant, cream-filled pastry dipped in chocolate (yum!). And to top it off, explore the nearby Het Bossche Broek nature reserve. Perfect for a relaxing walk or bike ride surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Delft: A City of Blue and White

Girls Who Travel | Delft Netherlands

Delft is a charming Dutch city that is renowned for its historic architecture and famous blue pottery. You have to visit the Nieuwe Kerk, where you can climb the tower for panoramic views and see the tomb of William of Orange. Then, explore the Royal Delft factory to learn about the city’s iconic Delftware and watch artisans at work. Finally, stroll through the squares, such as the Markt, lined with cafés and shops. I also suggest not missing the Vermeer Centrum, dedicated to the life and works of the famous painter Johannes Vermeer, who was born in Delft!

Rotterdam: A Modern Marvel

Girls Who Travel | Rotterdam Netherlands

Ah, Rotterdam. This one is close to my heart.

This city isn’t your typical European spot – it’s all about bold, modern architecture. Think the iconic Erasmus Bridge and the crazy tilted Cube Houses!

Rotterdam is a city that’s always on the move. It has a great mix of innovative buildings and cool things to see and do. Definitely check out the Cube Houses and the Markthal – it’s a giant market housed in a super unique building.

History buffs can dive into Rotterdam’s maritime past at the Maritime Museum. And if you want epic city views, head to the Euromast tower. For a more relaxed vibe, I loved strolling down Witte de Withstraat. This trendy street is lined with art galleries, cafés, and cool shops.

No Rotterdam trip is complete without a harbour tour! See Europe’s biggest port up close and get amazing views of the city skyline from the water.

The Netherlands is so much more than Amsterdam

Amsterdam is awesome, but trust me, there’s a whole other side to the Netherlands waiting to be explored! This tiny country packs a punch, from the peaceful canals of Giethoorn and the historic charm of Maastricht to the modern cityscapes of Rotterdam and the untouched beauty of the Wadden Islands.

Whether you’re a history geek, a nature nut, or just love soaking up culture, the Netherlands has something for everyone. So ditch the usual tourist traps and come discover the hidden gems this fascinating country has to offer! You won’t regret it.
