Discovering Montenegro’s 3 Breathtaking Destinations

Girls Who Travel | Montenegro

Montenegro is one of those places that made me feel like I’ve stumbled onto a secret. It has that Mediterranean glow but with fewer crowds, cheaper wine, and a lot more charm. It’s small enough to explore in a week but it’s layered with so much history, beauty, and soul. My trip definitely lingered with me long after I had left. The country sits along the Adriatic — tucked between Croatia and Albania.

If you’re looking for a destination that blends salty sea air, European stone walls, and gorgeous mountain views, Montenegro has it all. Three places that capture its spirit are Kotor, Budva, and Perast.

Kotor

Kotor definitely feels like a journey through the past. The first thing you’ll notice are the stone walls that rise high around you. I remember the smell of espresso and sea breeze as I walked along the narrow cobbled lanes that twisted and turned. I saw cats lounging on the sun-warmed steps and heard bells from century-old churches that echoed through the cinematic alleyways. It was dramatic and gripping.

In the morning, Kotor is quite peaceful and silent. You’ll see locals chatting outside the bakeries. I recommend grabbing a coffee and a flaky burek which is some sort of savoury pastry from Forza Café on the main square. Take your coffee to go and wander aimlessly as you meander through the magic of Kotor.

Come the afternoon, the town gets busier. The squares are filled with cruise visitors, the buskers show up with their guitars, and everyone gears up for the climb to the fortress which I absolutely recommend in doing. The Kotor Fortress hike is steep and sweaty but absolutely worth it. From the top, you’ll see the Bay of Kotor which resembles like a silver horseshoe. Go at sunset if you can; it’s pure Adriatic poetry.

Once you start feeling peckish, I suggest dining at Restaurant Galion. It’s an elegant spot right on the water. I had the grilled sea bass and a glass of Vranac, Montenegro’s bold local red wine. I’m not usually a fan of reds, but when in Rome! And if you’re feeling something much cosier, there’s Tanjga Family Restaurant that serves generous platters of meat, cheese, and roasted vegetables, perfect after a day of exploring.

I personally think evenings in Kotor are best spent wandering without a plan. Let your feet take you to tucked-away wine bars, an open-air concert, or a candlelit courtyard that will make you feel like you’re in a movie.

Budva

Budva is my favourite amongst the three destinations in Montenegro. This is also where I stayed the longest. It’s lively and sun-drenched. I consider it as the heartbeat of Montenegro’s coast with its golden beaches, sleek yachts, and a nightlife that hit the right spot.

During the day, you’ll have to explore Budva’s Old Town. It’s a maze of stone streets surrounded by medieval walls and open to the sea. It’s smaller and brighter than Kotor, less mysterious but more Mediterranean. I loved popping into local boutiques and grabbing a gelato at Moritz Eis. For lunch, there’s loads of options by the sea-view terraces. You’re spoilt for choice!

For some beach time, you won’t run out of options. Mogren Beach is where I first headed, it’s a short stroll from the Old Town. It has turquoise waters, dramatic cliffs, and just enough energy and vibe without feeling crowded. But if you want a quieter vibe, get a water taxi to Sveti Nikola Island known as “Hawaii Island” by the locals. Bring snacks with you, a good book, and SPF!

Towards sunset, head over to Sveti Stefan, the iconic island turned luxury resort that’s one of Montenegro’s most photographed sights. Even if you’re not staying there, you’ll thank me for the most insane sunset views from the coastal path.

And for dinner, I highly suggest booking a table at Jadran Kod Krsta. It’s a local favourite by the marina. Order the black risotto or the seafood platter or both. I had paired the risotto with a glass of Krstač, Montenegro’s crisp white wine.

Perast

Finally, there’s Perast. It’s a small, elegant, and peaceful little town. It’s just a short drive from Kotor and it’s all about stillness and reflection. One main streets hugs the bay lined with baroque palaces, stone churches and aesthetic waterfront cafés.

From the shore, you’ll spot two tiny islands floating just offshore called Our Lady of the Rocks and St George. Take a quick boat ride (they run all day) and just like myself, you’ll find yourself in the middle of a watercolour painting. The light on the water here is unreal, silvery in he morning and golden by afternoon.

Once you’re back on land, I’d advise to linger over lunch at Conte Restaurant.

It’s a Perast gem right on the water. I ordered the octopus salad and the homemade gnocchi with shrimp. Just sit and watch the boats glide by while listening to the soft echoes of the church bells. It’s all what vacationing is about.

It somehow feels like the perfect place to do nothing and yet feel like doing everything.

The Montenegro Feeling

Travelling through Montenegro felt like stringing together moments that shouldn’t exist so close together. One morning I was hiking above ancient walls; by afternoon, I was swimming in the Adriatic; and by evening, I was sipping wine under lantern light, with laughter, and music drifting through the air.
