The Perfect Female Guide to Solo Travel in Ireland

Girls Who Travel | A Woman's Guide to Solo Travel in Ireland: Unveiling the Emerald Isle's Charms

Ireland is like a giant emerald hug — everywhere you look there’s lush green countryside. I took a trip to explore the island, to see its rolling hills straight out of a postcard to its dramatic cliffs overlooking the ocean. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. On top of this, the Irish people are the friendliest bunch you’ll ever meet — history, culture, and fun are around every corner.

I felt the weight of its history in the old castles and ruins scattered around, reminding me of the tales that have been told for centuries. It’s a place where every corner has a story to tell and every road leads to a new adventure.

Ireland is calling all adventurous ladies, for sure. This beautiful island is perfect for a solo trip, whether you’re looking for excitement, making new friends, or just chilling in amazing scenery. Don’t worry, going alone in Ireland is totally doable.

Choose Safe and Female-Friendly Accommodations

When travelling solo, your choice of accommodations plays a crucial role in your safety and comfort. Opt for reputable hotels, hostels, guesthouses, or bed and breakfasts that prioritise security and cater to female travellers. Look for accommodations with positive reviews from solo female guests, centrally located with easy access to transportation and attractions.

Depending on where you choose your base to be, there are a myriad of accommodations to choose from.

Hostels

If you’re staying in Dublin, then Jacobs Inn is the best in my opinion. You have the option of staying in a female dorm where you can feel safer. You will get a personalised code and you will have to go through multiple limited access doors to get to the actual doorm rooms. Additionally, the dorm beds are actually individual pods which is quite different than what normally hostels would be like. This means you get more privacy than the standard bunk bed and curtains.

If you’re in Galway instead, I recommend staying at Kinlay Hostels where the cleanliness is to be applauded for. It is well equipped and has a very diverse clientele. Here, you can find women from their 20s up to the 60s! Breakfast is also included which is a huge bonus. Apart from the normal amenities and privileges you get in a hostel, it provided free computer usage, free luggage storage, free printing, and free city maps. Guest facilities include a comfortable chill-out lounge with pool table and a TV!

Hotels

As everywhere else, hotels and AirBnBs could be pricey in Ireland. But if you don’t feel comfortable sharing a room with other people, then opting for a hotel stay is the better option.

In Kerry, there lies Park Hotel Kenmare, that peers out over the tranquil expanse of Kenmare Bay. The hotel supplies weekly activities that include yoga and botanical walks, and right outside the gates are the postcard-pretty streets of heritage town Kenmare, with its galleries and indie shops. Do note, though, this is a five-star hotel, and a double room will set you back nearly €300 per night.

And then there’s Hotel Doolin situated in County Clare where you can also find the famous Cliffs of Moher. It’s a lot more affordable, not to mention, is Ireland’s first certified carbon neutral hotel. It’s cosy, stylish, and very homely. Perhaps, my favourite part of it all, is that they use luxurious organic Voya toiletries from hand harvested sea-weed off the west coast of Ireland,

Stay Connected and Informed

Before you embark on your solo adventure, make sure to stay informed about your destination. Research local customs, traditions, and safety tips specific to Ireland. Keep important contact information handy, including emergency numbers, embassy details, and accommodation addresses. Stay connected with your loved ones by sharing your itinerary and regularly checking in with updates on your whereabouts.

Local SIM

Purchase a local SIM card or ensure your international roaming plan is activated so you can make calls, send texts, and access data while in Ireland.

Saving on high roaming costs is the main reason for getting a prepaid sim card or an e-sim card when travelling to Ireland. Overseas data plans are expensive and they limit data speed. With a local prepaid sim card or an e-sim card, you get the best 4G/5G connection and the fastest internet data speed.

Wherever you may be in Ireland, your hotel or accommodation will most likely have WiFi and so do most bars and restaurants. But that is no guarantee! Having a data connection on your phone makes travelling so much easier. Ordering a taxi through an app or getting directions from Google Maps, finding nearby places of interest, emergencies, using banking apps, etc., will require an internet connection.

I recommend purchasing a sim card from Three. They have prepaid sim card plans for tourists with unlimited data for €20 and they have the best 4G/5G network in Ireland.

Social Media

Follow relevant social media accounts or hashtags related to travel in Ireland to stay updated on local events, news, and tips shared by other travellers and locals.

Trust Your Instincts and Be Mindful of Surroundings

As a solo traveller, it’s essential to trust your instincts and stay aware of your surroundings. While Ireland is generally safe for travellers, you need to exercise caution in crowded areas, tourist hotspots, and at night. Avoid walking alone in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas, and be wary of strangers presenting unsolicited assistance. Trust your intuition and don’t hesitate to seek help or move to a safer location if you feel uncomfortable.

Embrace Solo Activities and Group Tours in Ireland

Embarking on solo activities such as hiking along scenic trails, exploring historic sites, or enjoying a quiet picnic by the seaside were some of the activities I enjoyed autonomously. Additionally, you can consider joining group tours or guided excursions to connect with other travellers and even the locals. Group activities provide opportunities for socialising, making new friends, and sharing memorable experiences.

Hiking

Explore Ireland’s stunning landscapes on solo hikes along the Wicklow Way, Connemara National Park, or the Cliffs of Moher Coastal Trail (which was my personal favourite – one for the books!). For a group experience, join guided hiking tours such as those promoted by Hillwalk Tours or Extreme Ireland.

Cultural Tours

Immerse yourself in Ireland’s rich history and culture with solo visits to iconic sites like the Rock of Cashel, Newgrange, or the ancient monastic settlement of Glendalough. Alternatively, you can join guided cultural tours focusing on history, literature, or art, such as those provided by Paddywagon Tours.

Pub Crawls and Food Tours

Experience Ireland’s vibrant pub culture and culinary scene by embarking on solo pub crawls in cities like Dublin, Galway, or Cork. Joining food tours, such as those organised by Fab Food Trails or Irish Food Trail, provides an opportunity to sample local delicacies and meet fellow travellers.

PS, if you weren’t aware, the Irish love a drink or two. So, I definitely recommend going on a pub crawl and witness first-hand how these bad boys do it!

Boat Trips and Cruises

Take to the water on solo boat trips to explore Ireland’s coastal beauty, such as the Skellig Islands, Aran Islands, or the Lakes of Killarney. Group boat tours, like those operated by Doolin Ferry Co. or Dublin Bay Cruises, offer opportunities to meet other travellers while enjoying scenic cruises.

Pack Wisely and Prepare for Weather

Ireland’s weather is unpredictable, so be sure to pack accordingly. Bring layers, waterproof clothing, comfortable walking shoes, and essential travel accessories. Don’t forget to pack any necessary medications, travel documents, and a portable charger for your devices.

I’ve made a list of life-saving things to pack when travelling. Make sure to get a hold of each one to enjoy your solo adventure to the fullest.

Trust Yourself and Embrace the Journey

Above all, trust yourself and embrace the journey of solo travel in Ireland with an open heart and mind. Allow yourself to step out of your comfort zone, try new things, and savour every moment of your adventure. Solo travel is a liberating experience that fosters independence, self-discovery, and personal growth. By following my tips and trusting your instincts, you’ll create cherished memories and uncover the hidden charms of the Emerald Isle safely and independently.

So pack your bags, set out on the road less travelled, and let the magic of Ireland unfold before you. Your solo adventure awaits!
