Millions of tourists travel to California every year to worship the sun on its golden beaches and explore its vast, captivating landscapes. With metropolitan cities dotted between expansive areas of unique geology and natural beauty, the state is as diverse as it is beautiful. However, in high summer, temperatures throughout California can be sweltering, and while its distinctive locations are indeed stunning, they can also prove deadly to unsuspecting travelers.
Here, we offer some advice to help you stay safe in California during the summer so you can enjoy the many wonders of the Golden State.

Stay safe in California during the summer

4 ways to stay safe in California during the summer

1. Sun and heat safety

California is famed for its clear skies and bikini-ready temperatures, but prolonged exposure to heat and sunshine can be dangerous. On the beach, the sea breeze can mask the temperature, leaving you at risk of sunburn and heatstroke. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day and cover up with protective, lightweight clothing made from natural fibers to help keep you cool without burning. If you want to show some skin, be sure to frequently apply sunscreen and stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day.
The sun is at its strongest between 10 am and 4 pm throughout the summer months, so it’s best to opt for early morning and late afternoon adventures when exploring inland, perhaps to one of the state’s iconic national parks. Knowing the signs of heatstroke can save lives, and you should seek medical attention immediately if you or someone else exhibits these symptoms:
● Heavy sweating
● Weakness
● Nausea
● Dizziness
● Rapid pulse
● Confusion

2. Water safety

We are all drawn to bodies of water in summer. California’s glimmering beaches, beautiful lakes, and winding rivers are popular spots to cool off or play, but it’s essential to know the risks, too. You should only ever swim at beaches with lifeguards, and stick to the safe areas as marked by the red and yellow flags. Whenever you engage in watersports, wear a lifejacket and be aware of your surroundings. Stay mindful of marine life, as the Pacific Ocean is home to many jellyfish, sharks and other sea creatures. Knowing the signs of drowning can help you feel more confident when venturing into the water, and is crucial when taking children on holiday. It’s also important to take rest periods regularly and dress your children in bright neon colors – avoid blue, black and white swimwear as it’s harder to spot in the water.

3. Hiking and wildlife encounters

From the epic 340 km long hike along the John Muir Trail to a short climb to the enchanting viewpoint of Zabriskie Point in Death Valley, California boasts a plethora of hiking opportunities. You should always stick to the trail, however, as animals such as bears, mountain lions and rattlesnakes all live in the natural regions of this state. It’s easy to get lost in the wilderness when exploring the open spaces of California, so it’s best to travel in groups and stock up on emergency equipment such as satellite phones, a first aid kit, plenty of water and non-perishable snacks.

4. Earthquake and wildfire protocol

The dry, hot summers here are conducive to wildfires, and the area is also prone to earthquakes. Before heading out, check the local news and adhere to all fire restrictions and evacuation orders. If venturing into woods or forests, research multiple escape routes and keep an eye on any alerts of wildfires in the area on your mobile phone. Earthquakes can often be predicted, and you can also sign up for warning alerts on your device for these. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold On’, and talk to your children about earthquake safety best practices.
