The Perfect 10 Day Sri Lanka Itinerary for First Timers

Girls Who Travel | Sri lanka

Sri Lanka is one of those countries that hits you with everything at once. One minute you’re surrounded by misty tea plantations, the next you’re eating curry on the beach, and before you know it you’re on a slow train thinking this might actually be the best part. For first-timers, it can feel a little overwhelming, but in the best way possible.

This 10 day Sri Lanka itinerary is designed to help you see the highlights without burning out. You’ll get culture, nature, beaches, amazing food, and some of the most beautiful train rides in the world. It works for solo travellers, couples, or friends, and it keeps travel days manageable so you can actually enjoy the country.

Day 1: Land in Colombo and Head to Negombo

Girls Who Travel

Most flights land in Colombo either late at night or early in the morning. Colombo itself is cool, but for your first stop it’s easier to head straight to Negombo, which is just twenty minutes from the airport. It’s quieter, coastal, and a nice way to ease into the pace of Sri Lanka.

Walk along the beach, watch the fishing boats come in, and dig into your first Sri Lankan meal. Try rice and curry, hoppers, or kottu roti. It’s also a good day to sort money and get a SIM card if you need one. Pick somewhere near the beach so you can fully recover from your flight.

Day 2: Negombo to Kandy

Girls Who Travel

On day two, it’s time to head inland to Kandy, one of Sri Lanka’s most cultural cities. The journey takes around three to four hours, depending on traffic.

Kandy is cooler than the coast and surrounded by hills. You’ll want to check out the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which is a big deal locally, and then wander around Kandy Lake or sit in a café to watch life unfold. In the evening, catch a cultural dance show if you feel like it. Or just chill by the lake and soak up the atmosphere.

Day 3: Kandy and the Surroundings

Girls Who Travel

Spend a full day exploring Kandy at a relaxed pace. Start with the temple in the morning or evening when it’s quieter. Modest clothing is a must.

Later, hit the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. It’s peaceful, gorgeous, and perfect for a slow wander. If you’re into tea, a nearby tea factory tour is a fun way to learn about Sri Lanka’s most famous export.

Dinner is all about variety. Sri Lankan meals are shared plates, so order a few different curries and enjoy them together.

Day 4: Train to Ella

Girls Who Travel

This train ride is legendary. The Kandy to Ella route is packed with misty hills, tea plantations, and tiny villages. It’s slow, scenic, and honestly more of an attraction than transport.

Book a reserved seat if you can, second class is usually perfect. Keep snacks and water handy, but mostly just sit back and enjoy the views.

When you arrive in Ella, you’ll feel the change in pace immediately. Small, green, and laid-back, with lots of cafés and a chill backpacker vibe.

Day 5: Ella and the Hill Country

Girls Who Travel

Ella is stunning. Start with a morning hike up Little Adam’s Peak for views that make every step worth it. If you’re up for it, Ella Rock is a longer hike with even better vistas.

Girls Who Travel

Check out the Nine Arch Bridge in the afternoon, especially if you want to catch the train crossing for a photo moment. Then spend the rest of the day relaxing in a café or just enjoying the peaceful town.

Day 6: Head South to the Beaches

Girls Who Travel

Time to hit the coast. Mirissa, Weligama, Hiriketiya, and Tangalle are all amazing options. Mirissa is lively, Weligama is perfect for beginner surfers, Hiriketiya is relaxed and wellness-focused, and Tangalle is quiet and remote.

Pick one base and stick to it. South coast life is all about slow mornings and beach days.

Day 7: Beach Day

Girls Who Travel

Wake up slowly, grab breakfast by the sea, and spend the day swimming, surfing, reading, or just lying on the sand. Seafood is excellent everywhere, so indulge in fresh curries, tropical fruits, and coconut roti.

Sunsets are magical and often turn into a little social moment on the beach, which is part of the charm.

Day 8: Optional Activities

Girls Who Travel

Do what suits you. Whale watching in Mirissa, a yoga class, a cooking class, or visiting local towns. Small markets, artisan shops, and handmade jewellery are everywhere on the south coast. Support the locals while enjoying a relaxed day out.

Day 9: Back to Colombo

Girls Who Travel

Travel back to Colombo and spend the afternoon exploring a few key neighbourhoods. Pettah Market is chaotic and fun, Cinnamon Gardens has cafés and leafy streets, and Galle Face Green is perfect for a sunset stroll.

Colombo is busy and a bit chaotic, but it’s a fun contrast to the rest of your trip.

Day 10: Departure or Extra Night

If your flight is late, enjoy a slow morning or grab last minute souvenirs. An extra night on the south coast or in Ella can make the trip feel less rushed if you have the time.

This 10 day Sri Lanka itinerary hits the highlights without rushing you. Culture, nature, beaches, food, and train rides are all included, but there is time to breathe. Sri Lanka has a way of staying with you long after you leave, and ten days is just enough to fall in love and start planning your return.
