The Thousand and One Churches Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Published in 1909 and long out of print, The Thousand and One Churches remains a seminal study of the postclassical monuments of Anatolia. Now a new generation of readers can learn of the extensive remains of the sprawling early Christian site known as Binbirkilise ("Thousand and One Churches," near Konya), excavated by Ramsay and Bell in 1907. The book provides extensive analysis of other early Christian and Byzantine sites across Anatolia that Bell visited at that time. Because many of the monuments have long since disappeared, this documentation is now invaluable, and Bell's extensive photographs provide a unique view of travel and archaeology more than a century ago.-Print ed.

I felt like Gertrude Bell and want to retrace her steps. She was one tough mama!

Two brilliant people recreated the chaotic history of monasteries and churches near Konya in Turkey. Bell was a good organizer for the absent-minded Ramsey but he believed the New Testament could be backed up by archaeological finds. This was a door-opener for other archaeologists who followed. These editors are to be commended for bringing this book and this team back for us to read about.

I am very impressed by this excellent copy of a book reprinted with a new introduction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Early church geography.

Ramsey is the expert on the subject. He spent considerable time in Turkey searching for the remains of the early churches and was able to see things that no longer exist. The Cambridge reprint typeface is very good and the plates are reproduced better than expected.
